New Sanitation Policy at the SCCi Sinking Cove Preserve
Hello Cavers,
As Sinking Cove will open soon for visitation the SCCi requires anyone requesting an access permit to be aware of our new Sanitation Policy.
ALL VISITORS ACCESSING SINKING COVE UNDER AN SCCi ACCESS PERMIT are now required to pack out all solid waste under the sanitation plan. Several groups late last year and this winter have been using
"Restop" products. See there website at: www.restop.com/products/index.html Also several caving vendors stock this product. DCG will have over 50 in the cove during their visit later this month.
Use toilet paper sparingly and PACK IT OUT. Otherwise, burn in a very hot campfire, not with matches or a lighter. Tampons, etc. should also be packed out or "hot" burned. No paper is to be disposed of on the ground!
Urination: Not in or near the creek; on land exposed to the elements; rocks or sandy soil OK, at least 150 feet away from any water.
Avoid water sources, contact with insects or animals, social areas, i.e. trails, clearings.
Failure to abide by these rules will result in future permits being denied!
We have implemented this policy because last year after several group visits we even had the local neighbors complaining about the poop and paper around the perimeter of the field and creek. I along with several other SCCi BOD members looked over the site and we were shocked. We are loving the small camp area to death. We have had several groups there since we started implementing this policy for group visits late last season and none have had a problem dealing with the issue. I have been using the Restop packs for my trips and they are great. When you return home you just toss the packs in the trash.
The policy isn't meant to be a problem for visitors, but the camp and the creek have to be considered above all else. We have failed in being good stewards of the site. This is hopefully a way to resolve that.
