Tenn. to purchase cave for studyUniversity of Tennessee, The Daily Deaconline The state of Tennessee is in the process of acquiring an East Tennessee cave containing carvings and drawings dating back to the late 13th century. Referred to as No. 11, the cave is accompanied by 700 acres of land, and the state is acquiring it for up to $3 million, said Jan Simek, UTK’s interim chancellor and professor of anthropology. Currently, the land had been purchased from its original private owners by the Tennessee Parks and Greenway Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving Tennessee’s natural properties. Jeff Chapman, director of the McClung Museum and research associate professor in anthropology, said the key reason for preserving cave sites that contain archeological resources, especially art, is that they are prone to vandalism. “To acquire such a site affords an opportunity to… protect it for future study,” he said. The cave is currently gated and locked. Article
