Rescue 'delayed by police blunders'Lizzie Murphy CALL handling blunders by Northumbria Police delayed the rescue of a cave diver who died in the Yorkshire Dales earlier this year, an inquiry has found. Colin Pryer, 29, from Newcastle, died on March 13 after becoming entangled in ropes while diving at Lower Birkwith Cave, near Horton in Ribblesdale, North Yorkshire. But a report by the Independent Police Complaints Commission revealed mistakes by Northumbria police meant his rescue was delayed by 30 minutes. Mr Pryer's partner, Dr Gemma Jones, dialled 999 from their Newcastle home when he failed to call her. But Northumbria Police advised her to redial and ask for North Yorkshire Police, but when she did, she was again put through to Northumbria Police. She was then advised the call could not be transferred and she would need to obtain a direct phone number for North Yorkshire Police. The IPCC inquiry found there had been several procedural errors in dealing with the call, but it was "unlikely the delay (in re-directing the call) contributed to Mr Pryer's death". 23 December 2005 Yorkshire Post: www.yorkshiretoday.co.uk/ViewArticle2.aspx?SectionID=55&ArticleID=1294981
