I guess someone is dinking with the discussion board format.
Just to let you know, at screen res 800x600 and Netscape 7.2 (Or Internet Explorer 6) the new graphic (which is nice) takes up 15/16 of the frame, and the phrase "Please log inor Register" or "Hey, XXXXX, you have Y messages, Z are new and the date" is stacked and crammed into the remaining 1/16 of the width of the frame box. The type is butted right against the dark graphic border. Looks yuckky. You can probably solve the problem by adding a carriage return (Enter) or <P> or <BR> after the graphic and forcing the text to go to the next line.
I'm sorry but my eyes are too old to go to 1024 x768 screen resolution. If I do, I have to go to the 'visually challenged' size of modified type, which Win98 does not support very well. The rest of the board looks fine.

On my Mac using the Safari web browser it looks great as far as the size of the header. Only takes up about 60% of the width of the top frame. Same for Firefox and the old Mac version of IE. Different browsers render differently I suppose. Perhaps if you use a Windows PC using Mozilla, Firefox, Opera, or one of the other really good free browsers is a better option than IE (safer too I hear). The newest versions of IE tends to render things differently and can be difficult to deal with. BTW the header image is way cool! Looks like an EOS light shining out of the darkness to illuminate the letters! Nice. Dang that light is bright! DrB

I don't use Internet Explorer except when contacting the federal Government, which requires it (monopoly to monopoly privilege, I think)
I do use Netscape. I am perfectly happy with Netscape as long as they keep making it, since Mozilla/Firefox/Opera have taken away functionality I use in Netscape. Many of the 'free' browsers build their browsers to fit the simplified crap look that is an AOL version of Internet Explorer-- an "Outlook Express" version rather than full Outlook approach. This is because so many people's grandmas are on the Net now, and they have trouble operating a toaster. And some new toasters don't have darkness controls, either. Ya want toast? You got generic toast.....
In the javascript generated code to make the html appear in Netscape browsers, the problem is that the height of the image is set at 50 pixels, but width is not specified . Therefore the image in the first table cell expands to 50 pixels high, but in doing so it crowds all the text against the right hand margin, on an 800 pixel wide screen. There is no cellspacing or cell padding specified , which is why the text runs bang smack against the graphic.
Width, cellspacing and cell padding can be specifiied in Netscape. Another inconsistency is, under Windows, resolution is set to a 96 dpi/inch standard, whereas Netscape uses the actual 72 dpi of the graphical screen (and it interpolates commands which use the 96 dpi standard.) This is why pages appear differently in different browsers.
It is annoying to me because it is an easy fix in any web page....No one can make every page look the same in every browser, but it can be made to look tolerable in most of them with a litle thought. The easiest way here would be to specify the widths (not height) of the two cells (graphiic and text) by percentage --in the table. With the graphic at nearly the entire width of the screen it is not nearly as sharp as it might be at a smaller size.

Azurerana, I am glad you stay away from the dreaded IE. Win 98 is probably safer that XP now too since it lacks the "features" that make XP so vulnerable to spyware etc these days. My advice - get a Mac! But seriously, Netscape is a good browser but some folks find all the added stuff such as mail clients, webpage editing tools, and such to be more than they want to deal with (us grandparents that is he he). Other people feel that the extra features are just bloat that slows the browsing down. Who knows? Find what you like and stick with it.
Maybe the html for the header image can be modified to auto adjust for total percentage width and thus not take over the whole cell in the table. Maybe not. These free forums have more limits on them than home grown web pages. All in all it looks good and is getting better. Hang in there...
Now where did I put my toaster?

"This is because so many people's grandmas are on the Net now, and they have trouble operating a toaster. And some new toasters don't have darkness controls, either." Well Azurerana you are correct. This Grandma is on the Net too - but I don't even own a toaster. Humm...does a microwave count? ;D

I lived for 6 years (in St. Louis, not Fiji)) entirely without a stove, courtesy of a hotplate, a microwave, and a toaster oven. I could only do this because. I had a bread toaster, too. Having never had children, it is unlikely I will become a grandma. But my best girlfriend is/will be soon.

Just wondering if it is okay for other web sites who have linked to U. S. Cavers Forum ( www.uscaversforum.com ) to use our header on their web sites?

Do you mean using it as a link to us? Sounds fine to me, though it may be a bit large. Maybe we need a smaller version to use as a linking tool for other web sites. Thoughts here anyone?

Yes that's great! ;D So if web sites prefer they can use this for a linking image to U.S. Cavers Forum or they can use the text link uscaversforum.org
