Divers Search Jackson Mine PitMarquette County law enforcement submerged itself in Negaunee history. Thursday, members of the Sheriff's Department Dive Team used scuba gear to explore the Jackson Mine Pit. The area had been fenced off as caving grounds for decades, but was recently opened again. It's a training exercise determining what's under the surface and getting divers prepared for the unique challenges of working in a pit. Captain Dave Lemire said the temperature was near the mid 40s at the time of the dive. He added, "Someone couldn't survive very long in the water, and if it's dark and murkey. Divers need lights to see the bottom and it's 25 to 30 feet deep." The City of Negaunee requested assistance from the dive team to look for safety hazards and find out what's in the pit. After visual and underwater camera searches, they found mostly wood and plant debris. Article
