I thought madratdan posted this at first..... We have a Manitou Cave here in Colorado. You had me confused for a second there. I was thinking, what are they going to clean up in Manitou Cave?

You didn't have to do that. I was just surprised there is more than one Manitou Cave. I wonder if there's anymore?

Matt, yes perhaps there are more caves named Manitou in other states in the U.S. I checked in Mr. Webster's book. Manitou means a spirit or force of nature, either good or bad, deified in the religion of the Algonquian Indians.

A couple of weeks ago Jim Wilbanks posted an announcement about the SKTF and CAG sponsored clean-up of Manitou Cave in Fort Payne on Saturday, June 3, 2006. The work crew will depart from the SERA CAVE CARNIVAL at Buck's Pocket at 9:30 am. We will begin gathering about 9:15 am at the registration area. Written driving directions will be provided. Drive time is approximately 35 minutes if you travel the speed limit. Carpooling is encouraged so that we don't overcrowd the parking area at the cave. If you miss departing with the group you will be able to pick up directions at registration and join us at the cave. If you aren't going to be at the Cave Carnival and would like to participate please contact me at mgmills@earthlink.net This clean-up is to remove some trash and old wiring and lighting fixtures that are lying around in the cave. If time permits and we have enough help we may remove an old rotten wooden bridge. We have specific instructions from the landowner about what he wants removed and what he wants left in the cave. We will be using 5 gallon buckets and bags in the cave and wheelbarrows on the outside of the cave. You will need a helmet and light and don't forget your gloves. This is a former commercial cave so most of the work will involve moving the trash and debris on paved trails. There is some trash is in the stream so some people will have to volunteer to get their feet wet. Be sure to bring along dry shoes and socks. The work we need to do can most likely be accomplished in 4 hours if we have a good turn out so you can return to the Cave Carnival to enjoy the fun. Hope to see you there! Martha Mills SERA Vice Chairman & SFTK Committee Project Leader for the Manitou Clean-up Permission is given to copy and distribute this announcement on other caving related lists.
