Mike was pretty torn up by the popcorn lined passage. Most every inch of his upper body was red and scratched up. Looked like he had an alergic reaction to something. The good news is the passage can easily be enlarged to accomidate everyone, without drawing first blood. This turned into another typical Williams Canyon breakthrough. Dig a little......find a little........keep digging and follow the wind.........find a little more till you have a good days worth, of something to survey........talk about it at the bar and do it all again next week. Did I mention following the wind? (The reason Jon and I couldn't make it past the tight spot is......we really really like turkey. hint. hint. ;D )

Great going you guys! Hope Sunday's trip is as productive as last night's trip. I've got the Broccoli casserole and Hashbrown casserole in the oven now. Come on down here Dan and we'll take it over to Brian and Lynn's and join in the turkey feast. ;D Happy Thanksgiving!

I missed my Monday morning coffee and Moby's Caving Report Fix by Jon. So Tuesday morning I waited patiently with my coffee in hand for the Moby's Caving Report. But hummmmm....still no Moby's digging report update. Needless to say the worst thought of " OMG the cave must have collapsed with Joh inside! " raced through the chambers of my caffeine jittered mind. And so with the ' no digging trip report ' and an ever so slight case of a ' caffeine induced hyperactivity ' I hopped over to the Colorado forum to check for ANY update. I'm pleased to report...... TG! Joh is Alive! Ah Pooh! How disappointing it was to read the CC Trip Report thread! Anyway, after reading the CC forum it appears the weekly Moby's trip reports we have all grown to love and enjoy so well - might cease to exist. It appears many of the report have already been removed! What a Bummer, eah? Anyway, I would like to Thanks Joh and all the other cavers who take the time to post Caving Trip Reports on the Forum. It is always so wonderful to read Trip Reports from fellow cavers all over the U.S. on Monday or Tuesday morning with coffee!

I too am glad Jon is alive and well. We will all miss reports of digging, breakthroughs, technical challenges, and caving camaraderie if the posts cease or are removed. What a bummer. I wish the team well and hope that they may post occasional tidbits or at least the final story of this exciting cave dig. Of course we will all miss our weekly fix of good dig stories. Maybe someone can make some up? We're addicted ya know!

I think it's sad that Jon couldn't continue with the reports. Moby's was one of the best ongoing trip reports/cave exploration projects that I've read in a long time. I'll miss the weekly reports on how the cave is evolving.

Thank you all so much. I'm touched by your appreciation and sympathy for dealing with the senselessness.

Excellent trip report and pictures, Jon. I think you might of found a good solution to all the whining about WCP trip reports being posted. This way people can still see what we are up to and hopefully come join us in the fun someday.

Great update Jon! Really glad to see the exploration making such great progress, thanks for the photos! It is a shame that you guys have had to resort to PM's for this project. I think the caving community is poorer for not being allowed to see the results of the persistence put forth by the group of cavers that have worked this dig. This is exactly the type of project that should be held up as an example of one of the collaborative efforts cavers are involved in. When you complete the exploration of Moby's you should combine all of your past reports into an article for the NSS News. It would certainly make a heck of a cave exploration article.

Thanks for the TR Jon. The conservation committee took on the task of putting an enviromental gate or door on the newly dug cave entrance. Next time up I'll put something over the sphincter to help hold the moisture in that area. It will be some sort of a plug. It will have to be a dry, but tight fit. ;D
Airflow is are worst enemy when it comes to drying out formations and creating dusty areas that should be wet. We have been installing plastic gates and curtains in several caves and have noticed a big difference in moisture. Formations are dripping in those areas again, making it a very rewarding experience to see the life come back into things.
Many thanks to the dig crew for carrying up the supplies needed to build the new enviromental gate.

When you dig out of the snow I hope you can get back in there and open up some more good passage. Keep the reports flowing to all of your adoring dig fans! We all dig it!

Merry Christmas Moby's fans! I am going to be in Boise, ID, this weekend through Christmas. Sorry Idaho cavers but underground isnt in the agenda. What is the nearest caving to Boise anyway? Any lava tubes for some future visit?
Maybe caverdan is going next weekend but I'm not sure what I'll be up to. I'm planning to continue but I'll be starting at a new school so my reports may not be so regular. All the same, Happy Holidays!

12/30 There was nothing for it when Mikey called saying he and Mud-Donna were going ridgewalking. I realized I still had the keys to Moby's from Wednesday when nobody else showed up. I thought, "Do I keep writing math lesson plans or do I go caving?"; a definite no brainer. I have 4WD so I picked them up. It was a heavy slog up to the cave. The snow was about a foot deep. Some places the wind scoured clean but others had 4 foot drifts. When we finally got up to the cave, stupid me realized I had left the keys to the sphincter chain gate back down in the truck. Mikey and Mud-Donna were gracious about it and pushed the breakdown where the air is going instead of the far face. I continued my attack on the giant boulder in the passage we will soon use for haulage. Below is a sequence of images showing my progress. Here's how I found it. Note I was splitting off slices having already split the rock lengthwise. This is with the next slice removed and the beyond that another split. There's the next loose......and its gone.I finished with using up the charge on the drill putting in holes for trimming the next part in the way when I get up there again. I pushed the powder from drilling back into the holes as it will be easier to blow it out than try to get out chips and pebbles next time.It was only 2:30 at this point so I went down to the truck and Mikey and Mud-Donna ridgewalked until sundown. I then picked them up at the bottom and we went to the pub to rehydrate. Happy New Year!
