Beaver Lake Watershed Map released

BEAVER LAKE - A Beaver Lake Watershed Map was published last month by the Beaver Water District, in partnership with Audubon Arkansas.

The map contains important information for all communities that depend on Beaver Lake for drinking water, flood control, recreation and power generation.

...One area of concern for the watershed is the “karst” topography of caves, seeps and sinkholes in the Ozarks. Poor or scarce soil means that pollutants from agriculture, industry and development flow unimpeded into waterways.

According to map information, “The underground ‘karst' landscape ... reinforces the need to take special care when planning how and where to locate septic tanks, neighborhoods, and parking lots. Groundwater movement in karst can cover hundreds of feet in one day, making nearby wells, springs, and unique cave ecosystems particularly susceptible to contamination. What takes place in one part of the watershed has an effect upstream, downstream and underground.”...
